DAWGS ACQUIRE DEFENSEMAN JOE SOVA FROM FAYETTEVILLE

Roanoke sends rights to defenseman Travis Jeke to Marksmen

ROANOKE, VA – The Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs announced on Friday that they have acquired defenseman Joe Sova from the Fayetteville Marksmen in exchange for the rights to defenseman Travis Jeke.

Sova was picked up by the Marksmen in a trade with the Mississippi RiverKings on August 11. He spent the majority of the 2016-17 season with Mississippi, appearing in 49 games for the RiverKings as well as seven for the Peoria Rivermen. The 29-year-old blueliner totaled seven goals and 23 assists over his 56 games between the two teams.

A veteran of seven professional seasons, Sova appeared in the SPHL for the first time in 2016-17. He made his pro debut with the AHL Albany Devils in 2011 after completing his college career at University of Alaska-Fairbanks. Sova played in the AHL and ECHL from 2011-16 and was a teammate of Rail Yard Dawgs head coach Sam Ftorek for parts of three seasons with the ECHL Kalamazoo Wings.

Roanoke acquired Jeke’s rights in a trade with the Knoxville Ice Bears in February but the defenseman never suited up with the Rail Yard Dawgs. He appeared in 14 games for Knoxville, totaling one goal and five assists. Jeke also played for four ECHL teams in 2016-17 and did not record a point in his 16 games with the Toledo Walleye, Reading Royals, Elmira Jackals and Adirondack Thunder.

The Rail Yard Dawgs will open training camp in early October and begin the 2017-18 season at home against Fayetteville on October 20.
