ROANOKE ROCKETS PAST HUNTSVILLE, 4-2

Jacob Caffrey makes 28 saves for first pro win

HUNTSVILLE, Al. Jacob Caffrey made 28 saves, Jesse Schwartz scored his first professional goal and the Rail Yard Dawgs beat the Huntsville Havoc, 4-2, Friday night at the Von Braun Center.

Roanoke got on the board first late in the opening period. Steve Mele flung the puck toward the net and it sat loose in front of the crease before Schwartz crashed to the net. He wristed it past Mike DeLavergne and the Dawgs took a 1-0 lead.

The Rail Yard Dawgs added to that advantage  just over two minutes later while working on a power play. Sean Federow took a shot from the point that pinballed its way through traffic to the front of the net. Colin Murray grabbed the rebound and swept it in, pushing the Roanoke lead to 2-0.

Huntsville cracked back in the second period. Rob Darrar brought them within one just past the halfway point of the second before Connor Schmidt hammered home a one-timer on the power play, tying the game at two.

Roanoke regained the advantage early in the third period. With the Dawgs on a power play, Jeff Jones carried the puck to the right wing circle and fired a snap shot by DeLavergne’s glove to make it 3-2.

The Havoc pulled DeLavergne for an extra attacker in the final two minutes but could not crack Caffrey. Roanoke forced the puck into the neutral zone where Dillan Fox picked it up and shot it into the empty net for the insurance marker.

Fox had a goal and an assist, Murray scored for the second straight night and Caffrey made 28 saves on 30 shots, including 12 in the third period, to earn his first professional win.

The Rail Yard Dawgs improved to 5-5-0 with the win while Huntsville dropped to 4-6-1. Roanoke will return home to again take on the Havoc on Saturday night. It’s Capitals Night in Roanoke and the team will be wearing special Caps themed jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game. The first 750 fans will also receive a Dawgs beanie. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 PM and the pregame show begins at 6:50 PM on the Haley Toyota Rail Yard Dawgs Hockey Network.
