Colin Murray, Jordan Carvalho score in losing effort

ROANOKE, Va. The Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two goals in the second but could not hold on to their advantage as the Fayetteville Marksmen came from behind to beat the Rail Yard Dawgs, 4-2, Thanksgiving night at Berglund Center.

Roanoke got the scoring started early in the middle period. Off a won faceoff, the Dawgs worked the puck into the corner and Colin Murray dug it out. He carried it into the slot and ripped a backhander past Dillon Kelley to put the Rail Yard Dawgs on the board.

It took less than a minute for the Dawgs to add to that advantage as they started a breakout from the defensive zone. Michael Economos fed Jordan Carvalho in front of the net who spun and fired a shot five hole past Kelley, pushing the advantage to 2-0.

The Marksmen got one back late in the second due to a lucky bounce. Jake Hauswirth slung a shot that was headed wide until it ricocheted of a Dawgs stick and into the net to make it 2-1.

Fayetteville tied the game in the third after a Roanoke giveaway led to a breakaway for David Mazurek. He fired a wrister past Tanner Creel to tie the game at two. The Marksmen then took the lead later in the third when Fayetteville put two shots on net that Creel was able to fight off. Roanoke’s defense was unable to clear the puck, however, and Cody Brown poked it in to make it 3-2.

The Marksmen added one more thanks to a Mazurek empty netter and Fayetteville earned the 4-2 win.

Creel made 27 saves in the losing effort and Carvalho and Murray’s goals highlighted the Dawgs offense. Roanoke dropped to 4-5-0 in the loss while Fayetteville improved to 5-5-1. The Rail Yard Dawgs will now hit the road for Huntsville to take on the Havoc on Friday night. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 PM CST at the Von Braun Center. Air time on the Haley Toyota Rail Yard Dawgs Hockey Network is scheduled for 6:45 PM CST.
