RAIL YARD DAWGS BEATEN BY ICE BEARS, 3-1

CJ Stubbs scores in losing effort

ROANOKE, Va. – The Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs scored late but could not erase a 3-0 deficit as they were defeated by the Knoxville Ice Bears, 3-1, Saturday night at Berglund Center.

Knoxville opened the scoring in the first period. After a defensive zone turnover by the Rail Yard Dawgs, Lionel Mauron was set up on the back door for a tap-in past Henry Dill to give the Ice Bears a 1-0 lead.

Just over a minute and a half later, Knoxville worked the puck around its attacking zone and found Pierre Ouellette outside the left wing circle. He let loose with a slap shot that snuck past a screened Dill and the Ice Bears lead was two.

Knoxville added to that lead in the third period during its first power play of the game. David Brancik rammed a shot on net that Dill stopped but Lucas Bombardier got inside position for the rebound and nudged it in to push the lead to 3-0.

Roanoke finally got on the board with less than four minutes to go in the final frame. Jeff Jones got the puck to the front of the net and CJ Stubbs reached out for it and flipped a shot over Joe Murdaca’s shoulder and under the crossbar for the Dawgs’ only goal of the game.

Stubbs’ goal was his ninth of the season, Dill made 30 saves on 33 shots and Murdaca stopped 32 of Roanoke’s 33 shots on net. The Rail Yard Dawgs fell to 12-18-5 in the loss while Knoxville improved to 20-15-3. Roanoke will stay at home for Marvel Super Hero Night on Saturday night. Puck drop against the Macon Mayhem is scheduled for 7:05 PM at Berglund Center.
