ROUDEBUSH, DAWGS, BLANK ICE FLYERS, 1-0

Netminder turns away 29 in shutout win

ROANOKE, Va. – Jeff Jones scored in the first period to give the Rail Yard Dawgs the lead and Austyn Roudebush made 29 saves on 29 shots to help them keep it as Roanoke shut out the Pensacola Ice Flyers, 1-0, Friday night at Berglund Center. The Dawgs earned their third straight win with their second shutout of the season.

The lone goal of the game was scored just past the halfway point of the opening period. Marcus Ortiz carried the puck along the left-wing boards and fed a pass toward a cutting Jones in front of the net. Pensacola’s Jake Kupsky poke-checked the puck from his crease but it bounced off of Jones and caromed into the net, giving the Dawgs a 1-0 lead.

Pensacola ramped up its pressure in the second period and fired 15 shots on net in the frame but it could not solve Roudebush. He made both the flashy and the routine saves throughout the second and the third as he continued to baffle the Ice Flyers attack. In the waning seconds of the game, Pensacola pulled Kupsky for an extra attacker but was unable to mount any significant chances. The final horn sounded and Roanoke held on for its third straight win.

Roudebush made 29 saves for his first SPHL shutout, Jones’ goal was his tenth of the season and Ortiz picked up an assist in his first home game as a Rail Yard Dawg. Roanoke now has points in each of its last seven home games and the Rail Yard Dawgs have shut out their last two opponents on home ice. The Dawgs will return to action on Saturday night at home again against the Ice Flyers. It’s Wiener Dawg Race night and puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 PM at Berglund Center.
