DAWGS BURY THUNDERBOLTS IN OVERTIME, 4-3

Jordan Carvalho nets OT game-winner for Roanoke

ROANOKE, Va. Dillan Fox tied the game with a power play goal in the third and Jordan Carvalho buried a rebound in overtime as the Rail Yard Dawgs came from behind and beat the Evansville Thunderbolts in OT, 4-3, Saturday night at Berglund Center.

With Roanoke trailing, 3-2, just past the halfway point of the third, the Rail Yard Dawgs were granted a power play. Fox took the puck on a fly by behind the Roanoke net and sped down the right wing. He got the edge on the defense, swooped below the goal line and tucked the puck in on the far post ahead of a lunging Ed Minney, tying the game at three.

The Dawgs and Thunderbolts played the remainder of regulation to a tie and moved into three-on-three overtime. Just over two minutes in, Colin Murray took the puck along the left wing in the neutral zone and barreled his way to the net. He deked to his backhand and put a shot on that was blocked by Minney but Carvalho had forced his way to inside position for the rebound. He chipped the puck past Minney and into the net as the Rail Yard Dawgs took the extra point and won it, 4-3.

Carvalho’s goal was his second of the season and the Dawgs improved to 2-0 in games that required overtime with the win.

Evansville got on the board first in the second period as Pijus Rulevicius buried a wrister on a breakaway. Roanoke answered with a power play tally when Jeff Jones hammered home rebound off a Cam Bakker slap shot.

The Thunderbolts grabbed the lead back later in the second on a Brandon Lubin power play goal but Roanoke swung back again. Jones fed Mele in the high slot and Mele sent a snap shot to the back of the net to tie the game at two.

Evansville took the 3-2 it would not hold early in the third period on a power play goal from Nick D’Avolio.

Jones had a goal and an assist and Bakker dished out two assists to lead the offense. The Rail Yard Dawgs improved to 3-3-0 in the victory while Evansville moved to 2-6-1. Roanoke returns to action for Boo the U Night on Friday at Berglund Center. Puck drop against the Macon Mayhem is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Air time on the Haley Toyota Rail Yard Dawgs Hockey Network is set for 6:50 PM.
