THEUT BACKSTOPS DAWGS TO SHOOTOUT WIN, 2-1

Goaltender makes 33 saves in Dawgs triumph over Fayetteville

ROANOKE, Va. – Jake Theut made 33 saves and Mac Jansen’s shootout goal was the game-winner as the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs defeated the Fayetteville Marksmen in a shootout, 2-1, Saturday night at Berglund Center.

Roanoke struck first late in the first period while skating shorthanded. Just moments after a Fayetteville penalty expired to give the Marksmen a power play, Colton Wolter forced a turnover in the attacking end and nudged the puck to Brandon Wahlin. He carried it to the right wing circle and fired a snap shot that beat Ryland Pashovitz top shelf to put the Dawgs ahead.

Fayetteville answered late in the second. Following a defensive zone turnover by the Dawgs, Max Cook fed Frankie Melton alone on the back door for a one-timer that he blasted past Theut to tie the game at one.

Theut and Pashovitz baffled their respective oppositions throughout the third period, however, as Theut stopped 13 Fayetteville shots and Pashovitz made 12 saves. The game moved to overtime where neither team lit the lamp so it would be decided in a shootout.

Travis Armstrong struck in the first round for the Rail Yard Dawgs with a slick deke into a shot that snuck between Pashovitz’ legs. Theut stoned the first two Fayetteville attempts but Brian Bowen got one past him in the third round. Jansen answered quickly with a wrist shot goal on his try in the fourth and Theut stopped the final two Fayetteville attempts to cement the victory.

Theut made 33 saves on 34 shots, Jansen was credited with a goal for the game-winner and extended his point streak to seven games and Wahlin’s goal was his first as a Rail Yard Dawg. Roanoke earned three of a possible four points out of its weekend and improved to 5-11-3 in the win. Fayetteville moved to 11-3-4 with the shootout loss.

The Rail Yard Dawgs will return to the ice following a brief holiday break on Friday night in Peoria against the Rivermen. Puck drop at Carver Arena is scheduled for 8:15 PM. The pregame show on the Haley Toyota Rail Yard Dawgs Hockey Network begins at 8:00 PM and can be accessed via the new Rail Yard Dawgs app, available now in the App Store and on Google Play.
