RAIL YARD DAWGS FALL IN FAYETTEVILLE, 6-2
FireAntz Jake Hauswirth scores natural hat trick
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs allowed five unanswered goals and were defeated by the Fayetteville FireAntz, 6-2, Sunday night at the Crown Colesium. The loss was the Dawgs seventh in a row.
Roanoke struck first just over six minutes into the first period as Nick Schneider sprung Dmytro Babenko for a breakaway with a stretch pass. Babenko carried the puck deep, deked to his backhand and beat Sean Bonar to give the Rail Yard Dawgs a 1-0 lead.
Fayetteville answered just a minute and a half later when Joe Harcharik intercepted a pass in front of the net of Brandon Anderson. He slid the puck to Kyle Shapiro who backhanded a shot past Anderson, tying the game at one.
In the second, Roanoke got an early power play and cashed in. Jackson Brewer took a pass on the left wing, walked toward the left circle and let loose a wrister that beat Bonar top shelf on the glove side to put the Dawgs up, 2-1.
That was the high-water mark for Roanoke however as Fayetteville would score the next five goals, starting with a natural hat trick from Jake Hauswirth. He first scored on a one-timer on a power play, then cashed in on a rebound late in the second, again on the power play, to give the FireAntz their first lead of the game, 3-2.
Hauswirth completed his hat trick with another power play goal that barely squeaked between Anderson’s legs in the third. Mark Corbett and Joe Kalisz each added goals from that point to bring the final score to 6-2.
Roanoke finished the game 1-for-12 on the power play and killed off six of the nine penalties that it committed. The Dawgs were out-shot by the FireAntz, 43-31.
Anderson was pulled from the game with 7:18 to go in the third after allowing five goals on 41 shots. Ryan de Melo played the remainder of the game in net and stopped on of the two shots he faced.
The Rail Yard Dawgs will return home to again see the FireAntz on Friday at 7:05 PM at the Berglund Center. Roanoke will also face Fayetteville on Saturday at 7:05 PM for the first annual Teddy Bear Toss game.
