RAIL YARD DAWGS ELIMINATED FROM POSTSEASON CONTENTION IN 4-1 LOSS
Sean Orlando records first professional point
MACON, GA – The Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs got a goal from Steve Mele and 39 saves by Ty Reichenbach but were defeated by the Macon Mayhem, 4-1, Friday night at the Macon Coliseum. In the loss, the Rail Yard Dawgs were mathematically eliminated from postseason contention.
Macon struck first in the game with just six seconds remaining in the first period. Jake Trask took a pass from the right wing corner and one-timed it past Reichenbach, putting the Mayhem on top, 1-0.
Roanoke fought back and tied it up in the opening minutes of the second. Sean Orlando carried the puck behind the net and slid a pass in front to Mele. He jammed it through Jordan Ruby and tied the game at one.
Orlando’s assist was good for his first professional point in his second game as a pro.
The Mayhem regained the lead late in the second. Macon extracted the puck from a scrum along the right wing boards and worked it to a streaking Ryan Michel on the left side. He carried the puck in, deked to his backhand and beat Reichenbach to make it 2-1.
Macon added to its advantage on a Dennis Sicard goal early in the third. The Rail Yard Dawgs pulled Reichenbach for the extra attacker in the final two minutes and Stathis Soumelidis cashed in with the empty net goal, pushing the lead to 4-1.
Reichenbach stopped 39 of the 42 shots he faced, Mele notched his eighth goal of the season and Orlando recorded his first professional point in the losing effort.
The loss dropped the Rail Yard Dawgs to 17-29-9 and mathematically eliminated them from postseason contention. Macon improved to 36-13-6 and clinched the first seed and home ice advantage throughout the playoffs.
Roanoke will conclude its inaugural season on Saturday night against the Mayhem. Puck drop for the season finale is set for 7:35 PM at the Macon Coliseum.
