Bremner Recognized with Volunteer of the Year Award

The Rail Yard Dawgs head coach Dan Bremner has received the Richard Sher Volunteer of the Year Award. This award is given annually by Valley Youth Hockey Association to a volunteer that has made an outstanding contribution to youth hockey.

Stephen Esworthy, a member of Valley Youth Hockey Association’s Board of Directors, commented, “Dan is a particularly deserving honoree because of his commitment to our youth hockey players and to growing the sport of hockey in Virginia’s Blue Ridge. When it became clear that the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs would be unable to take the ice this season, Dan sought out opportunities to become involved on the ice and to teach the sport he loves. Bremner was very involved with the 18U AA Roanoke Jr. Dawgs, but he found time to work with every age and skill level in our organization – from Learn to Play to House League to Jr. Dawgs travel hockey. Valley Youth Hockey Association is grateful for the gift of Coach Bremner’s time and talents.”

The Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs were forced to opt out of the Southern Professional Hockey League’s 2020-2021 season due to capacity restrictions placed on indoor entertainment venues like Berglund Center. While the team’s staff wasn’t necessarily busy with managing live events or playing hockey games, they attempted to stay relevant by volunteering in the community and hosting virtual events during these months. Bremner was no exception and has remained involved both on the ice and in the office during this time.

“As disappointing as it was that we were not able to have a season, it allowed me the unique opportunity of really diving into youth hockey. Throughout the months of what would have been our season, I was able to assist with all levels of Jr. Dawgs hockey,” Bremner said echoing Esworthy’s comments. “It was a great way for me to fill the void and keep me sharp with coaching. I was impressed by the amount of time, effort and passion I saw from Valley Youth Hockey Association’s coaches and volunteers. Our hockey community is lucky to have so many dedicated individuals and I’m honored to be recognized as a part of that.”

The Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs are currently working on game dates for the 2021-2022 schedule. Season tickets, sponsorship packages and team merchandise are now on sale through the front office. For more information or to set up meeting, please call 540-266-7343.
