DAWGS RACE PAST MAYHEM, 4-2

Cody Dion scores twice in Roanoke victory

MACON, Ga. Cody Dion scored twice, Jacob Caffrey made 23 saves and the Rail Yard Dawgs dropped the Macon Mayhem, 4-2, Saturday night at the Macon Centreplex. Roanoke finished its three-in-three weekend with four of a possible six points.

The Rail Yard Dawgs started fast and opened the scoring less than two minutes into the game. Eric Witzel tried to stuff a shot short side but had it poked off his stick and the puck rolled into the slot. Jeff Jones gathered the loose puck and slung a wrister past Andrew D’Agostini to make it 1-0 Roanoke.

Just past the halfway point of the frame the Dawgs added to that lead. Steve Mele forced a turnover in the Macon zone and dug the puck out of the corner. He carried it towards the net then slid a pass to the slot where Dion hammered home the one-timer, pushing the lead to 2-0.

Macon evened things up with a pair of goals in the second. While working on a power play, Stathis Soumelidis deflected a slap shot in the slot and sent the puck up and over the shoulder of Caffrey to put the Mayhem on the board. They tied the game just over two minutes later as Jake Trask fed Caleb Cameron on the back post for a one-time goal.

Roanoke would snag the lead back before the second period ended. A delayed penalty was called against Macon and the Dawgs controlled the play with the extra attacker on. Dillan Fox glided from the left wing boards to the point, spun and fired a wrister that navigated traffic and beat D’Agostini to put Roanoke on top, 3-2.

The Dawgs held on to that lead throughout the third period as Caffrey stopped all five shots he faced in the frame. Roanoke added an insurance marker in the third when Dion fired a shot into the empty net and the Rail Yard Dawgs cemented a 4-2 win.

Caffrey made 23 saves on 25 shots, Jones had a goal and an assist and Dion scored twice. Roanoke improved to 7-9-0 with the victory while Macon fell to 13-3-2. The Rail Yard Dawgs will return to action on Friday night on the road in Knoxville against the Ice Bears. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 PM at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum. The pregame show on the Haley Toyota Rail Yard Dawgs Hockey Network begins at 7:15 PM.
