DAWGS OUT-GUNNED BY MARKSMEN, 4-1

Matt Beer scores for third straight game in Roanoke’s loss

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Matt Beer scored for the third straight game and Brad Barone stopped 38 of 41 shots faced but the Rail Yard Dawgs were defeated by the Fayetteville Marksmen, 4-1, Saturday night at the Crown Coliseum.

The Dawgs got on the board first in the opening period when Taylor Love fired a stretch pass to Beer who carried it in on a breakaway. Beer deked to his backhand and roofed a shot over Peter Di Salvo’s blocker side to put Roanoke on top, 1-0.

Fayetteville was able to answer later in the frame. Tommy Fiorentino extracted the puck from a scrum in the neutral zone and brought it down the right wing. He snapped a shot past Barone’s glove and evened the score at one.

The Marksmen took the lead in the second. Chris Porter took a slap shot from the point that Jamie Hill deflected on his way to the net. The deflected puck snuck through Barone and gave Fayetteville a 2-1 advantage.

That lead was extended to 3-1 in the third on another deflection goal. Ludlow Harris threw the puck to the front of the net and Jake Hauswirth redirected it through Barone’s legs.

Fayetteville tacked on an empty-netter in the final minute to push the score to the 4-1 final.

Barone made 38 saves on 41 shots as the Marksmen out-shot the Rail Yard Dawgs, 42-29. Beer extended his goal streak to three games and his point streak to four. Steve Mele picked up an assist and is now on a five-game point streak.

Roanoke fell to 9-15-3 in the loss while Fayetteville improved to 8-17-4. The Rail Yard Dawgs will return to action on Friday night at home again against the Marksmen. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 PM at Berglund Center.
