DAWGS FALL TO RIVERMEN, 6-1

Colin Murray scores lone Roanoke goal in the loss

PEORIA, IL – The Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs scored late in the first period to tie the game at one but then allowed five unanswered goals as they fell to the Peoria Rivermen, 6-1, Friday night at Carver Arena.

Peoria struck first in the game when Alec Hagaman got the edge on the defense and tucked a wraparound goal past Brad Barone’s pad. The Dawgs answered later in the period while working on a power play. Colin Murray took a pass at the left wing circle and carried the puck a stride before letting loose a wrist shot that beat Tyler Parks to tie the game at one.

The Rivermen took control in the second though, first when Joe Kalisz set up Connor Gorman for a power play goal near the halfway point of the frame. Peoria added to that advantage about three minutes later as Ben Oskroba’s shot navigated traffic and beat Barone to make it 3-1.

That would be it for Barone who was lifted in favor of Matt Zenzola at the first stoppage of play following the third goal. He was unable to stop the bleeding, however, and Kalisz lit the lamp in the second shot against Zenzola, pushing the score to 4-1.

Peoria added two more in the third, first when miscommunication had Zenzola scrambling to return to his net before Hagaman hammered one home. The Rivermen cashed in for their sixth goal as Geoff Fortman finished a two-on-oh breakaway.

Barone stopped 20 of the 23 shots he faced and Zenzola made 12 saves on 15 shots. The Rail Yard Dawgs killed of nine of Peoria’s ten power plays in the losing effort.

Roanoke’s loss was its third in a row against Peoria and dropped its record to 25-26-4. The Rivermen improved to 38-12-5 in the win.

The Rail Yard Dawgs and Rivermen will conclude their regular seasons on Saturday night at Carver arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:15 PM CDT
