DAWGS FALL SHORT ON NEW YEAR’S EVE, 4-1
Roanoke out-shoots Knoxville, 31-20, in loss
ROANOKE, VA – The Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs out-shot the Knoxville Ice Bears, 31-20, but came up short as they were defeated by Knoxville, 4-1, Sunday night at Berglund Center. Knoxville’s Troy Davenport made 30 saves in the victory.
The Ice Bears got on the board first while working on a power play in the opening period. Eliot Grauer snapped a pass to the right wing that Garret Clemment one-timed past a lunging Matt Zenzola to give the Ice Bears a 1-0 lead.
Knoxville added to that lead just 70 seconds later. Gehrett Sargis received a pass at the blue line and snapped a shot that navigated traffic and beat a screened Zenzola to push the score to 2-0.
Roanoke’s lone goal came in the second period. Joe Sova forced a turnover at center ice and charged in on a breakaway. With the puck on his forehand he flipped a wrist shot past Davenport to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Ice Bears cracked back at the outset of the third. After the Dawgs won the opening draw, the puck was poked loose and tracked down by Berkley Scott. He gathered it and fired a wrister past Barone to make it 3-1.Knoxville tacked on its final insurance tally six minutes later when Scott scored on a power play.
From the second period on, Roanoke out-shot Knoxville 24-11 but could not solve Davenport who made 14 saves in the third to help cement the Ice Bears win. The Rail Yard Dawgs fell to 7-13-3 with the loss while Knoxville improved to 12-9-1. Roanoke returns to action on Thursday night in Macon against the Mayhem. Puck drop at the Macon Coliseum is scheduled for 7:35 PM.
