DAWGS FALL SHORT IN KNOXVILLE, 4-2

Tanner Creel makes 48 saves in loss

KNOXVILLE, Tn. Maxime Guyon scored twice and Tanner Creel made 48 saves but the Rail Yard Dawgs saw the Knoxville Ice Bears pull away in the third period as they fell, 4-2, Friday night at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum.

Roanoke started fast and scored less than three minutes into the opening frame. Patrick Harrison fired a shot from the point that Guyon got a piece of with his stick. The deflected puck trickled past Hayden Stewart and into the net, giving the Dawgs the early lead.

It didn’t last for long however as the Ice Bears countered less than two minutes later. With the Dawgs working on a power play, Knoxville forced a turnover at center ice and glided in with a three-on-one rush. Charlie Granath led the charge and fired a snap shot past Creel, tying the game at one.

The game remained square at one until late in the second period with Knoxville on a power play. Danny Ceasarz put a shot on net that Creel stopped but Liam Kerins was able to get inside position and bang home the rebound to make it 2-1.

Roanoke fought back early in the third thanks to a gorgeous pass from Jeff Jones. He sprinted to a loose puck in the attacking zone and left a slick backhanded dish to the trailing Guyon. He let loose a howitzer that Stewart partially blocked but the puck skittered in and the game was tied at two.

The Ice Bears quickly responded with a pair of goals to put it out of reach. First, Anthony McVeigh buried a wrister top shelf off a rush. Later, Scott Cuthrell hammered in a rebound on a power play to push it to 4-2.

Creel faced 52 shots in his first professional start, 30 of which came in the third period, and made 48 saves. Guyon scored both goals and now has points in three straight for Roanoke.

The Rail Yard Dawgs fell to 1-3-0 in the loss while Knoxville improved to 2-1-1. Roanoke next hits the ice on Friday night at home against the Evansville Thunderbolts. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 PM at Berglund Center. The pregame show on the Haley Toyota Rail Yard Dawgs Hockey Network begins at 6:50 PM.
