DAWGS FALL SHORT IN FAYETTEVILLE, 4-2

Zach Tatrn registers two points in loss

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Zach Tatrn had a goal and an assist, Dmytro Babenko scored late in the third to bring Roanoke within one but the Rail Yard Dawgs were defeated by the Fayetteville FireAntz, 4-2, Friday night at the Crown Coliseum.

Fayetteville struck first on a power play in the opening frame. Tayler Thompson took a deflected pass in the slot and beat Ryan de Melo with a wrist shot to make it 1-0.

Roanoke would answer in the first minute of the second period. The Dawgs won the opening faceoff and eventually worked the puck to Tatrn who gained the zone on the right wing. He threw a shot on Sean Bonar’s net that the goaltender deflected but left a loose rebound. Tatrn charged the puck, gathered the rebound and snapped a shot five hole to tie the game at one.

The FireAntz regained the lead later in the period when Joe Harcharik won a faceoff to Jake Hauswirth who wristed a shot past de Melo to make it 2-1. They added to that lead just over a minute and a half later when Bobby Chaumont fired a shot that deflected off of a defenseman and bounced into the net, extending the advantage to 3-1.

Still trailing 3-1 in the third, Tatrn brought the puck over the blue line and fired a shot on net that Bonar stopped but again left a juicy rebound. Babenko tracked the puck and backhanded it past the lunging Bonar, bringing Roanoke within one.

The Dawgs would pull de Melo for an extra attacker in the final minute and pepper Bonar with shots that did not find the back of the net. In the waning moments, Thompson was sprung for a breakaway and tucked the puck into the empty net to cement the win.

Tatrn finished with a goal and an assist and de Melo made 33 saves on 36 shots. Roanoke fell to 12-18-5 in the loss while the FireAntz improved to 21-11-1. The Rail Yard Dawgs will return to Berglund Center ice on Saturday to host the Macon Mayhem. Puck drop for College Night is set for 7:05 PM in Roanoke.
