DAWGS DROP WILD ONE TO MARKSMEN, 8-5
Jordan Carvalho notches a goal and two assists in losing effort
ROANOKE, Va. – The Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs struck for five goals and tied the game early in the third period but ultimately came up short as they fell to the Fayetteville Marksmen, 8-5, Friday night at Berglund Center. Jordan Carvalho paced the Roanoke offense with a goal and two assists.
The Dawgs struck first on a four-on-four opportunity. Ben Bauer took a pass from Carvalho in the slot and fired a snap shot past Dillon Kelley, giving Roanoke a 1-0 lead.
Fayetteville cracked back with a pair of goals to take the lead but the Dawgs later took advantage of a pair of power play opportunities. First, while working on a 5-on-3, Cody Dion swatted a rebound out of the air and in to tie the game at two. About fifty seconds later, Colin Murray fired a shot on net that Dillon Kelley blocked, but Carvalho poked the loose puck in to make it 3-2.
The Dawgs added to that advantage with a Maxime Guyon goal early in the second but Fayetteville regrouped and netted three unanswered goals to take the lead. David Mazurek, Darren McCormack and Joe Osaka each scored and the Marksmen led, 5-4, at the second intermission.
Roanoke tied the game early in the third when Murray deflected a Steve Mele shot past Kelley and in but the Marksmen kept on coming. They finished the game with three unanswered goals and held on for the 8-5 win.
Carvalho led the Dawgs offense with a goal and two assists, Mele had two assists and Murray finished with a goal and an assist. Brad Barone started the game in net for Roanoke and made 15 saves on 20 shots faced. Tanner Creel entered to begin the third and stopped 11 of the 14 put on his net. McCormack paced the Fayetteville attack with a hat trick
The Rail Yard Dawgs fell to 1-2-0 in the loss while Fayetteville improved to 2-1-0. Roanoke next hits the ice on Friday night in Knoxville against the Ice Bears. Puck drop at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum is scheduled for 7:30 PM. Air time on the Haley Toyota Rail Yard Dawgs Hockey Network is set for 7:15 PM.
